SIT Study Abroad Nepal: Intensive Nepali Language (Beginning, Intermediate, & Advanced | January-term)

Begin or advance your Nepali language skills with an optional intensive summer course online followed by a three-week course Nepal in January for an immersive cultural and linguistic experience.

This intensive Nepali language program for all language levels is designed to immerse students in Nepali language, culture, and food habits. Explore Nepal’s diverse geophysical landscape during the January term. Each interactive lesson builds your confidence and capacity to understand and learn the Nepali language. The three-week online course is designed to combine both synchronous and asynchronous learning through grammar, sentence structure, and basic communication skills. Students who have a background in Nepali language will build on those skills to attain higher levels of speaking and comprehension.
 
The three weeks of intensive immersion in Nepal in January are designed to build on your previous learning. Enhance your Nepali language skills while living with a Nepali family in Kathmandu. An excursion to rural Nepal will include daily language classes, practice, and fieldwork while experiencing the diversity of Nepal’s geography, food, and culture.

Program Structure

This course offers a three week January-term in Nepal, as well as an optional online course in July 2020. The online course is open to all applicants. The in-person January-term is open to college undergraduates who have completed the online term or who provide proof of completion (or the equivalent) of at least one semester of language study. 

January-term Course Details

The in-country language learning is immersive, with three-hour in-person lectures Monday to Friday. In Kathmandu, you will stay with a Nepali homestay family and attend classes at the program center. You will have an opportunity to travel to rural villages and explore the environmental, geophysical, and cultural diversity while continuing language classes. During the excursion you will stay in small lodges, guesthouses or a rural homestay.

Optional July Online Course Details

Online classes are a combination of 45 hours of asynchronous and synchronous learning. Online video classes combined with recorded audio and practice lessons are designed to help you learn and practice grammar, sentence structure, and basic Nepali. Discussion forums will provide a platform to discuss and present queries about the daily classes. Assignments and practice lessons will go hand-in-hand with the online lectures to you prepare for immersive language learning in Nepal.
