Virtual Non-Affiliated
URI is affiliated with nearly 1000 different program options in over 80 countries. However, students may wish to participate on a program not affiliated with URI. Students may opt to do this for many reasons - so you can study in a country or participate on a unique program that URI does not offer, enroll in a program recommended by peers, etc.

URI students are not prohibited from participating in non-affiliated programs but, before doing so you must meet with an Education Abroad Advisor in the Office of International Education (OIE) to ensure:
  • You are making a decision that is best for you.
  • You are familiar with URI off-campus policies and procedures.
  • URI will accept the credit from the non-affiliated program.

Before applying to a non-affiliated program consider the following:URI may actually have an affiliation with the same institution.
  • Make sure that the program you are applying to provides quality academic work that will be accepted by URI for transfer credit (done in conjunction with the academic departments).
  • There may be comparable (or better) programs that you may not be aware of.
  • Discuss your responsibilities and the policies related to the use of financial aid and study abroad.
  • Meet with your Academic Advisor to make sure the program you have selected complements your academic plan of study.
  • Educate yourself about all aspects of the program
  • What courses are offered and how will they complement your academic goals?
  • What type of program is it and for what level of student?
  • What is the cost of the program and what does the program fee include?
  • Will the program provide you with the contact information of previous participants?

Program Fee: Variable  - Refer to program provider's web page.
OIE Office Administration Fee (added to URI e-Bill) $350 Semester programs/$150 Summer and J-term options
URI Off-Campus-Study (OCS) Fee (added to URI e-Bill) $555 Semester programs/$255 Summer and J-term options
Total Estimated Cost of Attendance: Variable
*NOTE: All fees are subject to change.

Financial Aid
URI institutional aid, such as Hardge Grants or Centennial Scholarships and tuition waivers, do not apply to non-affiliated programs. Institutional aid can only be applied to semester-long affiliated programs, except NSE "Plan A" program participants. Tuition Waivers apply only to direct one-to-one exchange programs. All federal aid (with the exception of Federal Work-Study, which does not carry overseas) will apply to any approved program regardless of URI affiliation.

URI students who will be using financial aid for their study away experience should meet with a representative in URI’s Enrollment Services - Financial Aid Office in Green Hall as early as possible in the study away application process. This is necessary to complete the appropriate paperwork in order to apply the student’s financial aid package to their study away experience and obtain information about their responsibilities as a recipient of financial aid.

In addition to the application to the program/institution itself, URI students are responsible for completing the URIAbroad application and meeting with an advisor in the Office of International Education to discuss the program.

  • URI E-Mail: Although participants are not physically on the URI campus, they should monitor their URI e-mail and e-Campus account on a regular basis and address billing, FAFSA, holds, etc. in a timely manner.
  • Change of Status: In the event of program cancellation, changes to the intended plan of study, reduction in course load, program relocation, or any other status change, students must notify their respective academic departments as well as the Office of International Education.
