FASHION STUDY TOUR
January 3, January 5 - January 16, 2020

This study tour to London and Paris is designed for students interested in textiles and fashion. London and Paris are two of the world's most famous fashion cities. Students will visit designers, forecasters, famous department stores, museums, and street markets. Upon arrival in each city, students will enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour that includes landmarks such as London's Buckingham Palace and the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Students will attend a day-long orientation and preparation day in Kingston, Rhode Island on January 3 prior to flying out of Boston's Logan Airport on January 5.
 

ACADEMICS

Students will earn 1 URI credit for TMD 342: Fashion Study Tour.

Coursework will be supplemented with various professional visits and cultural activities.
In London, tentative professional visits include: Prudence (millinery designer for couture houses), Liberty's Department Store, Zandra Rhodes workshop, guided tour of the Victoria and Albert Museum (an exhibition of the designer Mary Quant's work will be on view), Dover Street Market, British Museum, Camden Market or Portobello Road street markets, a fashion walking tour and a half day sightseeing tour.

In Paris, visits include: Yves Saint Laurent Archives and Museum, Louvre Museum, Louis Vuitton factory or office, a Perfumerie (Fragonard), Edlekhoort Trend Union forecasting service, day trip to Versailles and a half day sightseeing tour.

Students will attend a day-long orientation and preparation day in Kingston prior to the program's departure. Students will also be expected to keep a daily journal and to write a reflection paper after the program concludes.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Students will stay in double-occupancy hotel rooms. Breakfast will be provided.

Dr. Welters joined URI as a permanent faculty member after receiving her PhD from the University of Minnesota. During her tenure at URI, she has served as editor of Dress, the scholarly journal of the Costume Society of America, and as editor of the series Textiles that Changed the World (Bloomsbury). She has received numerous awards for her scholarship including the Distinguished Scholar award from the International Textile and Apparel Association in 2002 and the URI Foundation Scholarly Excellence Award in 2005. She travels regularly to Europe and has led two winter study tours to London and Paris.

Dr. Mead taught at Boston College and Simmons College in Boston and worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research before coming to URI. Since that time he has taught a variety of courses in the Department and taught, with Judith Swift, two additional film courses in the Honors Program – “Money and Misery” and “War Stories.” With Professor McIntyre, he also developed a Master’s level course in Macroeconomics and National Security for the Defense Leadership and Management Program that focused on the development of macroeconomics and geopolitics since the 1920s.
