Indonesia Global Health

January 3 - January 17, 2020

In this course students prepare for and participate in a two-week-long J-Term Travel Course to Indonesia. Prior to the travel component of the course students will complete focused readings on the WHO Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that aim to globally reduce inequalities among individuals and promote good health and well-being for all. Students will partner with local universities, health organizations and community leaders in Indonesia to develop and potentially implement a plan that helps raise awareness and treat non-communicable diseases. Students are expected to apply the knowledge from readings to help develop a practical plan. Students will work in interdisciplinary teams to implement training plans that they have developed. As part of the experience students will explore how history and culture impacts health of the local population in Indonesia. By understanding how addressing the social determinants of health reduces premature mortality students will enhance their perspective as future health professionals. Students will also have the opportunity to study the effectiveness of the traditional system of alternative medicine in Indonesia. Students will document their personal and professional growth over the two weeks by daily reflections and group discussion posts that will be an integral part of the learning experience.

Students will enroll in 3 URI credits in either: KIN 391: Directed Study, NUR 390: Directed Study, NUR 590: Independent Study or PHP 498: Independent Study.
