This year, The University of Rhode Island’s Chinese Flagship Immersion Program is an 8-week, virtual Mandarin Chinese immersion program for students committed to an intensive, proficiency-based learning experience. Using distance instruction modalities and synchronous online courses, the 2020 program offers three levels of instruction: Novice High/Intermediate Low level of proficiency, Intermediate-Low/Mid level of proficiency, and Intermediate-Mid/High level of proficiency. 

PROGRAM ELIGIBILITY 
 
Graduating high school seniors and current undergraduate and graduate students at URI or other institutions who have taken a minimum of one year of college-level Chinese or equivalent, and whose proficiency is at the Novice High or Intermediate Low level, are encouraged to apply. Priority consideration is granted to students currently enrolled in or admitted to any Chinese Flagship Program. You do not need to be a current URI student to apply to this program.

ACADEMICS
 
Participants earn 8 Chinese language credits during the 8-week program and select from one of the following tracks:

COURSES:
  • CHN 211 and CHN 212 (8 credits) - These courses are designed for first-year Flagship students, who have completed CHN 112 or its equivalent, or for adults and students from any institution (matriculating or non-matriculating) who have a Novice High/Intermediate Low level of proficiency interested in an immersive language learning experience:
  • CHN 305, CHN 306 and CHN 497 (8 credits) - These courses are designed for students  who completed the Flagship second year course or its equivalent and will move to third year level.  Adults and students from any institution (matriculating or non-matriculating) who have an Intermediate-Low/Mid level of proficiency interested in an immersive language learning experience:
  • CHN 311 and 312 (8 credits) - These courses are designed for students  who completed the Flagship third year course or its equivalent and will move to fourth year level.  Adults and students from any institution (matriculating or non-matriculating) who have an Intermediate-Mid/High level of proficiency interested in an immersive language learning experience:

PROGRAM COST
 
Program Fee: $3,135

Program Fee Includes:
  • 8 URI Credits
  • Supplemental language support from drill instructors
  • Administrative fees
