CONSUMER PRODUCT SYSTEMS SUSTAINABILITY

December 30, 2019 - January 14, 2020
 
 
This program will provide engineering students with a first hand experience of the problems and engineered solutions related to sustainability in a developing country. The program will start in New Delhi, the political center of the country, to observe consumer waste collection, treatment and materials recovery systems.  After visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra, a cultural icon, visits to Industrial and sustainability related organizations in Chandigarh will be organized.  Subsequently, a weekend in Simla, in the Himalayan foothills, will precede a two day sustainability workshop with faculty and students at the Birla Institute of Technology, Pilani.  En route to Pilani, visits to handicraft manufacturing centers in Jaipur will be arranged.
 

ACADEMICS

Students will earn 3 URI credits for ISE 491: Special Problems: Consumer Products Sustainability and Engineered Systems.

Coursework will be supplemented with excursions and cultural activities including visits to:
  • Indian Museum (Delhi)
  • Plastics Recycling Center (Delhi)
  • Sustainable manufacturing (Delhi, Pilani)
  • Manufacturing facilities (Chandigarh)
  • Textile recycling operations (Delhi, Jaipur)
  • Handicrafts manufacturing centers Jaipur)
  • Simla  (Himalayan foothills)
  • Clay cup production center 
  • BITS Pilani
  • Municipal landfills
  • Visits with ragpickers organizations

ACCOMMODATIONS

Students will stay double-occupancy dormitory style rooms while in India. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided.

Dr. Sodhi is a professor of Systems and Industrial Engineering in the Department of Mechanical, Systems, and Industrial Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. He serves as the director of the URI Summer Engineering Academy, a four-week residential and commuter program designed for high school students who want to explore the possibilities created by engineering in a hands-on, engaging fashion. A native of India, Dr. Sodhi received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1991. His research currently focuses on three broad topics, including: driver safety, based on eye movement detection for focus tracking; highly automated manufacturing systems; and increasing sustainability of consumer products by enhancing redesign, recovery, reuse and recycling.
