The fashion industry is truly global in scope, and the Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design Program (TMD) at URI is leading the way in providing students with a wide range of opportunities for off-campus study that will better prepare them for the world that awaits them upon graduation. Designed to prepare its students for success in fashion cultures here, as well as abroad, the TMD program has created opportunities for its students to participate in university programs in two of the largest fashion cultures in Europe - Italy and France. Fact is, more than half of all TMD students study abroad while at URI.
Mod’Spe: L'Institut Superieur Specialise de la Mode (Mod'Spe) is a Parisian fashion marketing and merchandising school located in Paris, France. With only two affiliations in the United States, The URI and Mod'Spe offers its participants the chance to set themselves apart as highly qualified global fashion marketers. Created in 1993 by professionals and supported by the government through the Development and Promotion of Clothing Committee (DEFI), Mod'Spe offers insight into the following sectors in France and abroad: men's wear, women's wear, children's wear, athletic wear, intimate apparel, cosmetics, fragrances, luxury goods, and accessories. A school that prides itself as being located at the intersection of business schools and fashion schools, Mod'Spe maintains a global reputation for offering superior instruction and learning opportunities to its students. Teaching consists of a mix between creativity, business, and professionalism with close partnerships of more than 800 companies. It maximizes these collaborations by incorporating them into student coursework that include site visits to industry locations, shows, and venues. Students learn first-hand about the ever-changing strategies and trends that revolve around marketing, sales management and purchasing in respects to a global fashion industry while also developing skills pertaining to the practical realities of the industry. Professionalization and rigor are two key components of the Mod'Spe methodology.
Selecting those students who are creative, intelligent and driven by their passion, exchange students experience full immersion into the Paris culture. Whether you attend a semester or academic year, Mod'Spe will help you turn your passion into your profession while enabling you to experience new cultures and live in one of the fashion capitals of the world.
A small campus encompassing a large townhouse (8,000 ft2), the school’s historic building offers space to grow both domestically and internationally. Mod’Spe is located in the 9th Arrondissement – Paris’s historic textile quarter. This area of Paris remains a very active center for fashion firms and offers easy access to important sites in the fashion world. However, it also serves as a popular destination for both foreign and domestic visitors. Fashion has been an important industry and cultural export of France since the seventeenth century, and modern ‘haute couture’ originated in Paris in the 1860s. Today, Paris is considered one of the world’s fashion capitals, and the city is home of many of the premier fashion houses, including Balenciaga, Chanel, Chloe, Dior and many more. Beyond matters of fashion, the city of Paris is also well known as one of the most intellectual and intriguing cities in the world. The city maintains its status as the premier city in France and a leader in politics, art and fashion; every section of the city has its own unique charm and makes Paris a city like no other.
